Looks like a contraption to turn fruit into mush. (I am a writer, I am very articulate when it comes to describing objects.)
Does it crack nuts? Probably not, but that's the first thing that I thought of. =)

Yes, a cider press! I've never seen one in real life. These are cool photos. I admit to a weakness for photos of machinery, the older the better.

An apple crusher machine thing was my guess, too. My sil found one (much smaller!) @ Goodwill a few months back. She was thrilled!
