Rediscovering things I love

Last night my 14 year old daughter and I hung out around the piano singing while I played. This used to be one of my favorite things to do, but I haven't done it in a long time. It's almost as if I forgot how much I love it. How do I do that? I suppose I get caught up in other things and push those old joys aside for new ones or things that just have to get done. Does this happen to you guys?

Being on the cusp of summer with the stress of school dissipating, plus not having to be quiet after 8 PM, the desire to sing and play hit me. How wonderful it was to be able to share it with my daughter. I think we're going to be doing it a lot this summer. She had a great time. I'm going to need to practice. She especially loves show tunes, and I haven't done a lot of those in the past.

What are some of your old loves that you would enjoy resurrecting?

What a great post!! I have been resurrecting my love of reading. I just graduated with a degree in English and somewhere along the way reading became so much more of a chore than fun; but I'm starting to read some of my favorite authors again and I love reading once more :)

sleeping in!!!! Even an extra half hour is so nice and something I love about summer.

I also love being able to get the chores and music practice done in the morning so I'm not running around trying to motivate the kids after dinner.

T Anne, Me too.

Princess K, When I finished college, I read a lot of "fun" reads to remind myself how much I love reading.

Tess, Oh, yeah, baby! I love that extra sleeping in that summer brings.

I love listening to music, doing jigsaw puzzles, sitting outside with nothing to do.
Glad you had such a nice time!

Now that it's summer and warm outside, I am resurrecting my love for swimming laps. I also share your love of playing piano! Now that I'm not so bogged down with school, I'm planning on hitting those practice rooms! :)

Awesome post!

Kaylynn, I had a very similar experience as an English major. In graduate school, I had to read The Color Purple, and that moved me like nothing had in years. It was then that I realized that I'd stopped reading for pleasure somewhere along the way, and only read what other people dictated to me, and only approached texts in the ways my professors said I should.

Even so, it took me at least a year or two into my career to really get back to reading like I had read when I was in k-12 school.

How awesome that you were self-aware enough to see what was going on and not waste as much time as I did. :)

SCUBA diving. I haven't been deep in water since my eldest daughter was born 7 years ago.

But the most beautiful places on Earth I've ever seen were 80 feet deep. Serene and calm, vibrant and colorful... I miss being underwater.

Oil-painting. I've only done a couple of paint-by-number kits, but for some reason, those are really fun for me. I guess I need the direction when it comes to painting. I also have a latch-hook rug that I want to work on. I haven't touched it in years, and I finally have a place to hang it IF I ever finish it.

Great post about the piano -- :)

Thanks, Beth. I'm sure we will.

PJ, I love jigsaw puzzles too. We were just working on one of those on Friday.

A, I used to love swimming laps. The sound of the water. The motion of my arms through it. The coolness on my skin. I miss it.

Joe, Thanks.

Lei, I've wanted to learn to SCUBA dive. I always thought it would be so cool to swim the Great Barrier Reef.

Rena, I miss painting too. I mostly do watercolor.

Bowling. I used to be in a league with my wife before we had kids. I was terrible at it, but I didn't care. One night a week I went out and threw down a couple beers and had fun being a klutz. I miss that.

Video gaming. Thanks to writing needs, I don't play much. Had a go on Sunday, and fell in love with it again.

Oh I love this! There's so many thing I don't do often enough with my kids, but taking them camping, playing catch with a football and playing pool are three ones I can think of off the top of my head. Thanks for the reminder.

That sounds wonderful! Isn't it interesting how busting out into song can really soothe the nerves? I love Scottish Country Dancing (think very similar to regency dances) with my husband. My health has been bad, so we haven't been able to do it for a few years, but I look forward to being able to do it again. :D

Like you, I'd like to play the piano and sing. Years ago, I had a piano and I taught myself to play chords, enough to sing along. But I haven't had a piano in over eight years.

Sadly, recently I was at a home with a piano and I couldn't remember how to play a thing. That really bugged me.

Lois I used to draw endlessly when I was younger and I literally never do now. I don;t know why. I didn't stop loving it. SOmehow it just slipped out of my life.

Along with my ability to do the splits...

..and my waistline.

Come to think of it they all disappeared when the kids appeared.

Aww, I love doing that too. I haven't done it in a while. That's so fun. This summer I hope to boat, swim, and play with my kids more.

Joe, I've never been very good at bowling. I would definitely be on the klutz end.

Yuna,Sunday must have been the day.

Angela, Yeah, summer is a great time to indulge in those things. I sat down with my 8 year old this morning and read out loud for a long time. It was great.

Danyelle, Music is a wonder to me. It's incredible how much it helps my mood.

Justus, I used to love riding a bike, but I don't even have one now.

Suzanne, Yeah, it's amazing how quickly things like that leave us. I took piano for 10 years and still lose technique etc. when I don't play for a long time. I've forgotten so many songs that I used to have memorized.

JaneyV, Kids change a lot of things. They stop us from doing so much, but they add a lot too. I guess it's a trade off.

Kasie, Me too. It's nice when the pressure's off.
